Flower SOS

This is my first Dahlia of the season. Up here in Powell we have such a short growing season that I get one flower and then we get a frost and I loose all the other buds. Also this year we've had an amazing amount of grasshoppers and they're eating all my buds as you can tell by this flower. Does anyone have any advise on how to deal with the grasshoppers and when it gets to cold? Yesterday morning it was 34 degrees! I need a lot of help.
I'm still happy I got this one flower. It encourages me to try again next year!

I would give you advice if I had any, but alas, I kill everything I try to grow...

So, Dahlias pretty much can't handle a freeze. That is the end of them. Sorry!
And, Scott said the thing for Grasshoppers would be harsh pesticides!
